Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Perform work with little or no supervision, from work orders, relying on experience and ingenuity
.Perform duties that meet accepted trade standards assigned through work orders and oral instruction
Installs, maintains, and repairs high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating, and steam-generating systems
Performs various new installations of plumbing and steam equipment from laying out, ordering materials, roughing-in to finished job.
Repairs, maintains, adjusts, installs and improves all allied equipment for plumbing and heating, such as meters, back flow devices, compressors, steam traps, grease traps, strainers, reducing valves, heating coils, etc.
Familiarizes self with how activities impact VA’s goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources.
Possess the skill and knowledge of a Journeyman Pipefitter. This includes shop mathematics and a general knowledge of electrical, mechanist, refrigeration, welding and steam generation.
Interprets and works from sketches, blueprints and other technical guides during performance of duties.
Reads and interprets blueprints, layout sketches, manufacturers’ literature and specifications for sizing, estimating, installing (proper routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation)
Calculates piping runs and performs repairs of pumps with a high degree of accuracy.
Planning and laying out work with or without written instructions.
Performs duties, with hand tools and handling of heavy materials that require the exertion of considerable energy.
Proficient in the use of hand and power tools common to the plumbing trade
Traces and troubleshoots pipelines and equipment to locate and repair leaks or troubled spots.
Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: During the performance of duties, incumbent exerts considerable energy in working with hand tools and handling heavy materials. Required to crawl in ceilings and work in stooped and squatting positions for prolonged periods. During the performance of duties to include working from ladders, scaffolding and platforms. Frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may lift and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds.

Works under various heating and lighting conditions. When performing work outside will be expose to inclement conditions with temperature ranges from extreme heat or cold. Will become exposed to dust, grease, insulating material, obnoxious sewer gases and chemical fumes. Will be exposed to burns from hot piping, steam and gas welding torches. Also will be working with gases of explosive or combustion-sustaining qualities.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
